The first edition of Zen et Zazen has been out of print for some time, so it was necessary to re-publish this vade me cum of the Zen practitioner.
How do you practise zazen? How do you sit? What do you do once you’re sitting? How do you deepen your practice? What should you expect when you practise intensively in a group (sesshin in Japanese)?
In the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, the essential practice is zazen. In this concise book, Master Taikan Jyoji covers the fundamentals in order to show the Way for beginners, but also for those who have already participated in a sesshin. He explains clearly, with illustrations, how to direct one’s breathing and posture, both on the zazen cushion and in daily life.
A commentary by Yamada Mumon Rōshi on Zazen-gi—the oldest text presenting the essentials of sitting practice in the Zen Buddhist tradition—has been added to the new edition. It reminds us that the rules that serve as beacons for the traveller on the Path have a long history.
